Meltdown and Spectre - What you must know - affecting practically every computer built in the last 20 years

Important update: about Computers, Servers, PCs, Laptops etc. Your PC may get hacked.

You’ve probably already read about one of the most widespread security issues in modern computing history — colloquially known as “Meltdown” (CVE-2017-5754) and “Spectre” (CVE-2017-5753 and CVE-2017-5715) — affecting practically every computer built in the last 20 years, running any operating system.

What are Spectre and Meltdown?

Spectre and Meltdown are the names of the flaws found in a number of processors from Intel, ARM and AMD that could allow hackers to access passwords, encryption keys and other private information from open applications.

The flaws, found by a number of people including a member of Google’s Project Zero, are sending shock waves through the IT world. Namely, it was revealed that they had been present in chip designs for over 20 years, and that they affect a number of companies’ processors, meaning the flaws could be found on a huge number of devices, from PCs to web servers and even smartphones.

So should you be worried?

So far it doesn’t look like the Spectre or Meltdown flaws have been used in an attack, and device manufacturers are working with Intel, ARM and AMD to fix these flaws.

Intel has claimed that the exploits can't corrupt, modify or delete data. While it’s good to see companies set aside their differences to find a fix for these flaws, it has emerged that one flaw, Spectre, may need a processor redesign to fix.

However, this does mean that future processors should be free from the Spectre and Meltdown security flaws. So, don’t be too alarmed, but keep an eye on any updates your device offers, and follow our advice on how to protect against the Meltdown and Spectre CPU security flaws.

Before making any changes:

Make sure that you have full backups of your data
If you or your customers are using any Antivirus software, you/they should first check compatibility with the software vendor.

Ther are various patches available for Windows or Linux servers. You must contact your network administrator or web server/hosting provider for the same.

Please Note: Applying the patches may have a negative impact on overall performance.

Steps 1 and 2 are documented on Microsoft's website.

Due to the way this vulnerability was made public, not all patches and updates may not be currently available.

Most useful Browser Extensions for Web Designers or Developers

We will discuss some of the Useful Browser Extensions, which will help you save a lot of time and stay ahead of other teammates.

What mostly we “the Designer or Developer” need?

  • Identify Color on the sample website.
  • Identify Fonts used in the text of a web page.
  • Capture screenshot of a Full long page of the website.
  • Spelling Check or proofreading webpage content.
  • Create video tutorial or Screen Record, Share steps to replicate a bug or issue.
  • Create, edit spreadsheet for reports etc. and share with the team or your boss.
(here we are talking about basic things, which sometimes takes time. Although there are many aspects which designers and developers needed) – Let’s stick to basics first.

Useful Browser Extensions

1. Identify Color on the sample website.

Guess how you find out which colour is being used in sample website, or image in a page, some of designers or developers, specially freshes see the source code or use developer console and manually find the CSS used of the particular colour, this is sometimes confusing and time-consuming.

Well then, stop the traditional way and be smart, make use of the most useful browser extensions available out there in the store. Some are free some are paid, depending on your requirements, choose what’s best for you.

Color Picker Eye Drop Chrome Extension

2. Identify Fonts used in the text of a web page.

Finding the fonts sometimes becomes a challenge and when you are looking at your sample website and trying to guess which font is used in it, it could take a lot of time to find if multiple fonts are there and you are wasting a lot of time comparing fonts. But for ease, there is Chrome extension. In just one click you will find the exact name of the font. With “WhatFont” you can identify fonts of the webpage in just a click, the new version also has a colour identifier so you can see which colour is used in the text.

WhatFont Chrome Extension

3. Capture screenshot of a Full long page of the website.

How do you capture a screenshot of a webpage which is long? I assume some are using just default PRTSC/PRNTSCRN button and joining different screens in Photo Editors like Photoshop. Some may be using Window’s “Snipping Tools”. Still, there is a lot of work to be done when taking screenshots and combining them and present or showcase to your employer. If not already using Google Chrome Browser’s Extension “Full Page Screen Capture” then I’ll suggest using it. Save a lot of your time and efforts.

Full Page Screen Capture Chrome Extension

4. Spelling & Grammar Check or Proofreading webpage content.

Not all are good in English, sometimes we do a very basic mistake like forgot to add punctuation marks, use of connector words like and or and this could change the meaning of the text. Search engines also see basic mistakes and may affect your search engine rankings. A situation like this sometimes could be embarrassing.

So how do you enhance your written communication when you type? “Grammarly” is the perfect solution for anyone, everyone who is typing anything may use Grammarly Browser Extension. This will seriously improve your English by suggesting you corrections for the mistakes you do WHILE TYPING.

No Waiting, No proofread later, It will suggest you corrections while you type and you can make corrections and improve your writing.

5. Screen Video Recorder – Capture Videos.

Capture, Edit and Share Videos, Record browser tab or computer screen, just like that.

Fed up sending screenshots and explaining bugs to developers or team? or want to make video tutorials? “Screen Video Recorder” is the solution. One of the must-have Useful Chrome Extension.

Go to Chrome Web Store and look for Screen Video Recorder. There are few basic to advance extensions, depending on your liking and requirement, choose the best chrome extension.

6. Do More with Google Drive.

Google is our friend, most of us are using Google tools and Services, but still not making full use of it, Google Drive as you know stores your data and you can share access it online on the go, can share it with anyone as well.

Google Drive Extension is really helpful when you are collecting and sharing a lot of data, Google Drive Chrome Extension is one of the most useful browser extension.

This extension allows you to save web content directly to Google Drive through a browser action or context menu. You can save documents, images, and HTML5 audio and video all by right-clicking and selecting ‘Save to Google Drive’. You can save the currently viewed page using the ‘Save to Google Drive’ browser action. The directory location and format of saved HTML pages can be controlled with the extension’s options page (Choice of an Entire image (default), Visible image, Raw HTML, MHTML, or Google Doc). You can automatically convert Microsoft Office files or comma separated files to Google Docs format.

Save to Google Drive Browser Extension

7. Take Selective screenshot Prnt Scrn – LightShots

“LightShots” it has two versions Browser Extension as well as Desktop application, depending where and what you need, I’ll prefer using Desktop application, Because it will enable us to take the screenshot in any application and not limited to the Browser, however, if you need just for browsers then Install LightShot Browser Extension.

It is a simple and convenient screenshot tool. Select an area, edit your screenshot and upload it to the server.

Lightshot is the fastest way to take a customizable screenshot. Simple interface, nothing useless and lightweight.

Capture Selective Screenshots using LightShots Browser Extension

These above are the easiest and widely used chrome browser extensions. Though there are several different extension which may have advanced functionality and thousands of different extensions for the different type of uses, feel free to browse and test them out.

These are useful browser extensions which help in increasing productivity by saving time and yet are free or very low cost.

How to secure your WordPress website, how VertiDesk can help?

Secure your website from most of the hackers.

Although WordPress core application software is very secure and it gets audited regularly by several developers, but over the time of heavy development or using various plugins, themes or custom integration which are outdated may sometimes make WordPress completely vulnerable to hackers/attackers.

Not only the WordPress websites, but other websites on any CMS or even static website built simply in HTML can be hacked easily. Hence, it is important to check the security from the back-end server to your web pages.

We all know what a hacker can do once he hacks your website. He can steal any information like stored passwords, email ids, credit/debit card info or can make changes in your website or even can put down your whole server.

What can you do for WordPress Website Security?

There are various recommended methods especially for WordPress websites, sometimes we ignore sometimes we adopt few. The more you secure your website less will be chances of hackers getting into your website.

What should you understand?

How to secure your WordPress websiteKeep your WordPress software, plugins, themes updated: Updating will help remove vulnerability to attacks. If you Plugins or Themes are not updated or not getting updates at all, consider replacing them.

Removed unused Plugins, Themes: If you are not using any plugin and is already deactivated, delete them, same for the themes, even the default themes which you are not using, delete /remove them.

Disable Comments in WordPress: If you are using WordPress as a website and not using post comments at all or very less and do not want comments, better to disable comments and turn registrations off as well.

Use Plugins and Themes from trusted sources, also check for their update interval, reviews to identify the quality of plugins and themes.

File and Folder Permissions: Do not assign 777 Write permission to files or folders, unless a must required by trusted plugin or theme.

Default User Names: Consider not using Admin, Administrator or Webmaster as username, try different names, the hacker’s first attempt will be always with user Admin, Administrator. Use your own name or random name so hackers won’t guess it.

Strong Passwords: Always use Strong password, never use names or related to website names, abc123, admin123 etc. are easy to guess and crack. Use Random password more than 8 characters, a combination of Upper and Lower case letter along with Numbers and special characters eg. AA14&tg{u)2-jZ. Using such password above 8 characters or 16 will take too long to crack.

Encrypt Important information: Do not store passwords as it is, it should be stored encrypted (like MD5 encryption) in Databases.

Two-Step authentication: If possible use two-step authentication, grant access with SMS OTP or email OTP (One Time Password) along with the regular password.

Use firewall and antivirus in your computer: This will not only help in keeping your PC safe keeping malware or code injector away, who can inject unwanted codes when you upload content to your website.

Limit logins to prevent Brute force: Brute Force is the most used method to attempt login, hacker try repeatedly several passwords sometimes hundreds or thousands in a minute, Preventing Limited failed login attempt and blocking the offenders will keep your WordPress website safe from the first of the hacking attack attempts.

Security Scan: Regularly scan your website, web server for any vulnerability or malicious codes which may get injected by the hacker or uploaded while uploading your website.

Backup ALWAYS: Always keep a backup copy of your work, Code, Database etc. If in any case your website got hacked or you lost data, the backup will help restore date to the date it was taken.

Disallow default file editor: In WordPress admin, there is an option within to edit Theme code files, if not is use and for security, you can disable the default editor.

Disable PHP Error Reporting: You must also disable Error reports which may display when your web page has errors in it. This way hacker may utilize the error in his favour to hack in.

How can you do?

There are various methods, by which you can secure your WordPress website, a developer can do required changes in code or you can simply use some of the good plugins available to achieve the same for eg.: Jetpack, Limit Login, Akismet, iTheme Security, Sucuri etc. You need to have the understanding of the usage of these plugins and their features and functions, sometimes one plugin may conflict with your custom theme or other similar plugins, or sometimes you need to modify server settings to achieve better security for your WordPress websites.

Google Taking Steps to Discourage Fake News Sites

We have seen many websites, blogs, article, news, magazine sites publishing Fake News. Most of the time this was done intentionally to capture the attention of visitors or search engines and earn revenue. Intentionally generating fake or misleading content is not ethical, and using the name of the high brand or valued person to gain value is purely a sign of misleading info.

There are some websites who create Fake News and clearly states that those are fake and just of fun.

Discourage Fake News

Some SEO enthusiasts also build duplicate content using article spinners or copy paste articles from other sites. This also creates tons of misleading data resulting in the end user to land on a website which actually doesn’t have any relevance to it.

Google has announced that it will fight against the Fake News and also against the website putting misleading content or harsh content.

Internal Name – Google OWL Project (not confirmed yet) is already in place now and taking care of such content. Google has covered various aspects in this project which could impact on search rankings.

Discourage Fake News and Harsh Content and Low-Quality Search Suggestions.

Direct Feedback Tools – when you perform search and see an auto-complete or suggested search terms, you can actually report or send feedback to google about the quality of the suggestions. These feedbacks will help improve the search algorithm and put the quality search suggestions in place of fake or harsh ones.

Search Engines Like Google has already evolved its search results, however still facing criticism of placing low quality and offensive search results for which Google is taking necessary steps every now and then.

So if you are an SEO expert or agency with less or no knowledge about search algorithm, you must then update your knowledge and start working with clients on genuine content – Content is still the King, It needs to be unique and focused to your website niche.

Most Common Website Designing Mistakes to Avoid and How VertiDesk Can Help

Today, sometimes it is so easy to build a website and launch within few hours. But sometimes it takes a week or a month to get online with the perfect website. Website Design Industry has grown a vast and continuously growing at a rapid pace with a lot of opportunities and options still available for website designers.

Most of the website designers sometimes forgot that website is to be built for the users. Fortunately, you need not be a highly experienced designer to build a nice website, but one must avoid some Most Common Website Designing Mistakes.

Most Common Website Designing Mistakes

Avoid these common mistakes in your website designing, you will see the difference in functionality and increase in visitors to your website.

What makes a website a ‘Good Website’

A Design may not have any limits, you can keep creating so many designs still. There isn’t any universal standard for a Good Website Designing, but it is how you build it. The tools or techniques used said to be the “Best Practices” used for building a great website.

vertidesk website designing

A Good Website Design must improve on:

  • Usability

  • Neat and Clean

  • Readability

  • Highlight Call to Action

  • Quality Content

  • Interlinking

  • Mobile friendly

  • Security

Usability

The first question, who is going to use the website? simply the visitors, the end user. Who will buy your products or the services you offer. You don’t need a website for yourself but for visitors who will become your customers. A Good website design should focus on the usability first.

If it is a product selling website then you need a cart system, payment gateway, user accounts, reports etc.

If it is an informational corporate website then obviously you don’t need cart or payment gateway, you need user data, visitors who contact you for your business.

if it is a personal blogging website that all together you need is a content rich look.

So you need to be clear on the usability and give your visitors features or functionality they need with enhanced user experience (easy to use).

Neat and Clean

Do not afraid of white or blank space, Always give enough breathing space between each section of the web page. Do not mix the content, do not make the page look cluttered. Most of the website designers forgot that and try to put as much content on one page. This will end up in the cluttered website and hard to read content, you user may get confuse.

Avoid too many flashy content or images, always keep website Near and Clean.

Readability

Sometimes website designers or owners ask designers to put long Too long titles and repeat it in several instances. For a book publisher it may be fine, but for a website, it may be not the case.

Your readers seeing the same content, again and again, may not read it if there is something important. Always give Title and Subtitles to differentiate the parts of the page. Keep your content categorized, even properly categorize your blog post and keep them separate with pages.

Highlight Call to Action

For what purpose you need a website or a page? you must be clear and do not confuse your visitors, what to do?

Placing right Call to Action will help your website visitors to read it clear. If you are selling a product, your call to action may be “Buy Now” or “Add to Cart”. If you wish your visitors to contact you for the product of service you are offering, you call to action may be “Contact us” or “Call 9xxxxxxxxxx).

This will always give your visitors a reason to take an action you prefer your visitors to take from that page.

Quality Content

Always said “Content is King” always write content that matters most to your visitors, keep it generic from the user point of view and not your’s alone. Write unique content and never copy from other or competitor websites. It will lower your Search Engine Score and you will not rank high for that.

Use minimal H1 tags to justify your page, H2 tag for your subtitles. Using 1-2 H1 tags for the main title are fine at the top and just before the end of the page. Tag one or two different title is also fine, this way search engines will know about your primary keywords of that page.

Unique and to the point content will help search engines to discover your business and rank you higher in search results.

Interlinking

Website structuring and interlinking each page is most important, which many designers may forget sometimes. Badly placed navigation or located in odd place may result in visitor frustration and high Bounce rate.

The navigation menu should be easily accessible and should have enough space in between for clicks, especially on handheld devices like smartphones.

If you place 2 different linked text close, the user may not be able to click the right link he wants to click. Placing them with proper distance or using a block to differentiate both links will help. It also increases the usability and user friendliness.

Mobile friendly

With the increase in technology usage, smartphones are most commonly used for accessing websites. A website designer should see that a website must be mobile friendly (Responsive), not only for mobiles but for tabs, and other devices of different screen sizes.

Mobile friendly website tends to gain more visitors than desktop websites. Users will go away from a mobile device if it is not fit for their device. A mobile friendly “responsive” website is a key to Good Website Designing. Nowadays search engines also check if a website is mobile friendly or not if it is then you will rank high in search results from devices as well.

Security

Once you get a website if it important to secure website from hackers or spammers. A website designer must focus on building a website which is secure and make sure to further secure it.

There are various ways to secure a website, some of them are:

  • Get SSL Certificates

  • Malware Scanner

  • Secure Code

  • Auto Backup

  • Keep your code/script and database updated
